Final Gather

Final Gather does not need photons. Rays are cast for points at different parts of the scene and sample the colors of the objects the rays hit. The color information is sampled back to the starting point of the ray and then the color information is averaged.

These are the results of a simple portal light test. The only light is a Physical Sun/Sky node that ware placed as the environment on the camera. Then a portal light was placed in the opening and used to pipe the light in from outside.

With no Portal Light (Or sphere).

By default the environment node reside in the Maya software render settings, under render options
Once you create the node, mental ray will respect it in rendering

Can't believe it's been just over a year since my last post here. Figured I'd make use of this blog by linking important findings in the Maya world here.
Today I found a script online that lets particles emit fluids on Maya.

Texture Rigging and MEL

This was an interesting experiment in learning MEL. I wanted to make a panel of lights that would individually sample color information from a texture. After learning a bunch of new stuff I got the concept to work. A 3D rig which turns any images I feed it into a panel of lights. Mind each of the 1840 individual element displays only one color at a time...As a test video, I used a sample from the 2008 Olympic games... This same concept can be used in creating Christmas lights, large display grids, and just about anything that needs individually colored elements... More to come with this.

Well the animated short wasn't what I was expecting. Cartoon Network only ended up using about 10 seconds worth from the middle of the short. But it was still cool to see some of my stuff on TV.

One of the best things ever has happened!!!!!!!

A friend of mine wrote a 60 second script for a contest conducted by Cartoon Networks, Adult Swim. It was to promote their show Xavier: The Renegade Angel. It was a really funny script so I said I'd do the animation for him... The entry was rushed, the animation was crude, but WE GOT FIRST PLACE!!!!!! So my animation is going to rule the airwaves of Cartoon Network an entire 60 seconds, all across the nation, and watchable by anyone with basic cable... Not bad for an hours worth of work... I don't know the air date, but I'll post it here when I find out.

(Oh, that was rushed animation. I'm almost embarrassed, but this is too good.)

This is a character from an anime series that I like. I still need to fix the mouth area, UV unwrap, and merge the two halves. The eyebrows will be textured. I'm going to build the body next...
